Stalemate in Brøndby

The A-League’s number one and three faced off on Saturday afternoon at 1964 Park, as HB Køge Women visited Brøndby IF. A match that, for large spells, was played on the Swans’ terms, with the visitors also creating the biggest chances of the game.

The first half quickly set the tone. A home side sitting deep and compact, and an away side tasked with breaking them down. It was no easy task for HB Køge Women, who patiently tried to open up the Brøndby defence without really becoming dangerous. At the other end, HB Køge stood well organised, and the home side did not create any notable chances. The teams went into the break at 0-0.

The same pattern continued in the second half, with HB Køge Women in control and creating the better opportunities. The chances also began to grow in size. Substitute Mai Wendicke came close when she was played through on goal and managed to get her finish past the goalkeeper, but the ball struck the inside of the post and stayed out. Later in the game, she had another big chance when she rose to meet a cross and headed towards goal, but this time the crossbar denied her.

Towards the end, Mai Wendicke was involved again, combining well with Mille Gejl to break through the Brøndby defence with quick, short passes. The ball fell to Mille Gejl, who got a shot away, but a Brøndby defender threw herself in front of it and blocked the attempt. The match finished goalless, and HB Køge Women take a point home from Vestegnen.

The Swans remain top of the A-League, five points clear of second-placed Fortuna Hjørring, who face AGF on Tuesday.
