Martin Bernburg appointed Mental Coach at HB Køge Women

HB Køge Women have strengthened their sporting staff with the appointment of former professional footballer Martin Bernburg as the club’s new mental coach.

Bringing experience from the highest level of Danish football and a strong academic background in sports psychology, Martin will contribute to the development of the team’s performance ahead of the upcoming season.

“I see a squad that already has a strong winning culture and a clear motivation to keep improving – both individually and as a team. At the same time, the squad is relatively new in its composition, which makes building cohesion and trust a key priority, so that players and the coaching staff truly have each other’s backs when it matters,” says Martin Bernburg.

He also highlights a strong curiosity among the players when it comes to working in a structured way with the mental aspects of performance.

“There is an openness to working with focus in training and matches, as well as the ability to handle pressure. That provides a very strong foundation for integrating performance psychology as a natural part of everyday work – not just as an add-on, but as a strengthening factor in overall performance,” Martin Bernburg explains.

A strong match between theory and practice
HB Køge Women’s Head Coach Kristian Mørch sees Martin Bernburg as a clear fit for the club’s sporting setup and ambitions.

“Martin strikes a really strong balance between theory and practice. He has a solid theoretical foundation, but at the same time he is focused on making things work in practice. And he is a playful, curious profile, which fits well with the way we like to work and develop the squad,” says Kristian Mørch.

Martin Bernburg has a background as a professional footballer and has previously represented FC Copenhagen, FC Nordsjælland and Brøndby IF, in addition to earning four senior international caps for Denmark. He holds a Master’s degree in Sport Science with a specialization in sports psychology and currently works professionally with mental training and performance development.
