Kristian Mørch ahead of UWCL: "We've Been Looking Forward to This So Much"

European football returns to Køge Idrætspark on Wednesday evening as HB Køge Women host Latvian champions Riga FC in the semi-final of the second qualifying round of the UEFA Women's Champions League.

For head coach Kristian Mørch, it is a match the entire club has been looking forward to ever since securing the Danish championship in June.

"We've been looking forward to this match so much. Once we secured the championship, apart from celebrating it, this was one of the things we were most excited about. Our entire season planning has been built around making sure we're as strong as possible for this moment," says Kristian Mørch.

A Squad That Thrives Under Pressure
Despite a place in the final being at stake, Mørch believes his players are well-equipped to handle the occasion.

"One of the special things about this group is that they're extremely good at finding the right level of intensity. When we've been under a lot of pressure, they've stayed relaxed, and when we've been favourites, they've been able to create the necessary edge themselves. They're very mentally consistent, and that's a huge strength."

Thorough Preparations for the Latvian Champions
Unlike a regular league match, the coaching staff have had the opportunity to prepare in greater detail for their European opponents. A member of the staff was even sent to Wrexham to watch Riga FC in action.

"We've prepared a little differently than usual. We had a member of our staff travel to watch Riga play, so we've gained a really good understanding of them."

Riga FC arrive in Køge with an impressive record. The Latvian champions have won all 11 league matches this season with a remarkable goal difference of 90-2, including a 22-0 victory.

"They're a team that dominates everything in the Latvian league. They also beat Gintra 3-0 in the Baltic Cup, so they're a very strong side from the Baltics. But at the same time, they're not used to facing the kind of opposition we'll bring, and that's where our advantage lies."

Focused on Our Own Performance
Despite the quality of the opposition, the approach for HB Køge Women remains clear.

"It's a one-off match, so perhaps we'll play a little less openly than we do in many other games. But first and foremost, it has to be about our own performance. If we perform at the level we know we're capable of, it should be enough to take us through—while, of course, respecting the quality of our opponents."

A Big European Night at Køge Idrætspark
Wednesday's clash will be played in front of the home crowd, and Kristian Mørch is looking forward to another memorable European night in Køge.

"We're excited to be playing at home and to experience the special atmosphere that comes with an evening kick-off. We hope for great support so everyone can feel that this is a special occasion, something a little different from our usual matches."

Kick-off at Køge Idrætspark is at 7:00 PM (CEST) on Wednesday, with the winners securing a place in Saturday's final of the second qualifying round of the UEFA Women's Champions League.
