HB Køge Women secured an important 1-0 victory over Fortuna Hjørring on Sunday and have now returned to the top of the Women’s League table with two rounds remaining.
After the match, head coach Kristian Mørch was pleased with large parts of the performance against the reigning Danish champions.
“I think the final two-thirds of the match were played at a really, really high level. We still have to remember that we were up against the Danish champions and cup winners, so we can’t just expect to dominate opponents every single time,” he said.
Although Fortuna pushed forward towards the end of the match, the head coach was especially satisfied with his team’s defensive display.
“Maybe we played a bit nervously towards the end, and we started focusing too much on the occasion itself. But I actually think we handled it really well. I hardly think we gave anything away today, and that’s impressive considering we also had to make changes within the team,” Kristian Mørch said.
The victory also means that HB Køge Women reclaim first place after Brøndby IF Women’s result the day before.
“We are playing to win the championship, especially now with only two rounds left and everything in our own hands. But the focus is always on continuing to deliver the really good football we are playing at the moment,” said the head coach.
The match-winning goal was scored by Nadia Nadim, who returned to the scoresheet.
“That’s the stage made for Nadia. She has to be there, and she has to be part of doing this,” Kristian Mørch said.
Two decisive matches now await in the title race, but the head coach still wants the team fully focused on the performances themselves.
“We have to be careful that it doesn’t turn into too much of a final atmosphere. It’s a football match that we need to go out and play, and we’ve been good against these teams when we’ve simply approached it as a football match with a specific challenge,” he concluded.
